Chair Stories, 2022

This series explores the emotional relationship people have with chairs. Each book tells the story of one person and a chosen chair. Each has a different character, a different history and it is immediately resonant of the person to whom it belongs. In each book, abstracted photos of the chair and its owner, together with their comments, overlap and layer through the semi-translucent pages.

Digitally printed on Japanese paper, hand-bound with envelope. 9 x 13cm. Edition of 20. All six in a hand-made box.

Caroline Penn was previously an editorial photographer and picture editor. Having completed her MA in Book Arts at UAL Camberwell in 2015, she is now established as a book artist working with photography, found imagery, drawing and text. Her work often involves the home. She is interested in houses, the everyday objects with which we fill them and the stories they tell.

Her studio is in Hackney, London and she is a regular exhibitor at artist book fairs with works shown in London, Paris and New York. Caroline’s work is held in major collections at The Victoria & Albert Museum, Tate Britain, The British Library and The Ecole des Beaux-Arts, Paris.
