Letters of Triangles, 2013

During WWII Russian soldiers sent correspondence to their loved ones in triangular folded forms, the letter and envelope being one. This allowed censors to access and edit sensitive material without compromising the structure. The simple design meant that the content and address of the recipient were never separated, and the letters were easily identified and prioritised. These letters often carried vital news from the front line. Lucy May Schofield uses the format, taking extracts from blog posts written during stints working abroad to express the loneliness and sense of longing experienced by one far from home.

140 x 140mm, 2 pages, letterpress printed in copper and gold ink on found and tracing paper. Edition of 40 of which the first 10 are housed in a handmade clamshell box lined with a mascara stained handkerchief inkjet print and special edition triangular letter (making 3 pages). Title in Russian on front of box. Numbered not signed.
