Coastline, An Illustrated Journal by Hannah Cousins, 2019
In the autumn of 2015, Hannah Cousins and her husband took a road trip from San Francisco to Los Angeles along State Route 1. Her journal, 'Coastline', is ‘a celebration of that beautiful landscape and a tribute to our time travelling down the California coast.’
Cousins spent two years transforming her drawings and photographs into linocuts and illustrations for the book. Her goal was to capture the atmosphere and liveliness of the west-coast Californian landscape, including locations such as Carmel-by-the-Sea, Big Sur, and Ojai. The artist mentions the influence of 'Back Roads of California' by Earl Thollander (Menlo Park, 1977), but was also inspired by John Steinbeck, Joan Didion, and Jack Kerouac.
58 pages, 275 x 358 mm. Typefaces include Monotype Walbaum (series 374) and headings set using Kabel & Zeppelin type by Rudolf Koch. Ornaments cast by Don Winter. Printed by Nomad Letterpress at the Whittington Press, Cheltenham.
Edition of 105. Illustrations by Cousins are printed from the original linocuts, and the double-page spreads have been hand-coloured by the artist using pochoir. The book is covered in Japanese book cloth and comes with a turquoise slipcase.
