Arranging Furniture, 2021
Jason Dewinetz with an introductory essay by Aaron Peck
Canada’s Okanagan Valley is home to Jason Dewinetz and the Greenboathouse Press and provides part of the inspiration for this typically thoughtful and poetic production. Dewinetz is arguably Canada’s finest contemporary printer but he is much more, he is a writer, educator, typographer and publisher and winner of more than a dozen national book design awards.
Arranging Furniture was inspired by the paintings of Agnes Martin but Aaron Peck’s essay discusses the prints in context of Canadian Landscape Painting and in particular the palette of the Okanagan Valley. Dewinetz chose to produce this book recreating Martin’s paintings using only letterpress furniture. It is a work of genius.
Printed on 150gsm Hahnemuhle Biblio with 24 compositions. Text hand-set in 16 pt Cloisster Lightface, cast in-house from the original ATF matrices with as Dewinetz says ‘some beaten up old Franklin Gothic for headings, and some equally beat up wood type for the title page’. Bound in a stiff paper case of St Armand Sisal Coffee with exposed linen thongs, with one of the furniture compositions on the front. The end papers are Barcham Green Charter Oak with a cloth slipcase.
