Too Late, 2008

Here is an open book. Although other pages are visible, there are no pages to turn. This book from the series titled ‘Up Close’ is described by the artist as a sort of diary, where text, images, drawings and doodles come together in an informal way. The text described by the artist’ as mostly impromptu writing…almost like mind mapping’ is in both English and his native tongue, Kannada. A photographic image is enhanced with drawing and text, while the embossed words ‘Too Late’ emphasise the miscommunication that is at the heart of this delicate but humorous work.

Ravikumar Kashi (b.1968) is an Indian artist based in Bangalore. He has degrees in painting, printmaking and English. He studied handmade papermaking first in 2001 at Glasgow School of Art and then in 2009 he went to Korea to study Hanji – traditional Korean papermaking. His sculpture and bookworks have been widely exhibited in India, as well as in China, and the USA. His work has been seen very little in the UK although he has work in the collection of the Victoria and Albert Museum.
