Lee Cutter, London, UK
An Inside Story, 2019
This book gives insight into the everyday of prison culture. Covered and hand bound with fabrics inspired by prison bedsheets and visitation shirts, 218 pages, 13.5 x 11.5 x 2cm, signed and dated by the artist, edition of 99.
Over the past few years, Lee Cutter has written short stories and made meticulous carvings using prison soap that reflect on memories of his own experience of isolation. 99 of these carvings were recently displayed at the RA Summer Exhibition. This book brings together photographs of each carving alongside its short story. Lee began making soap carvings, from prison-issue soap, when he was locked in his cell for 23 hours a day with no access to art materials.
Lee Cutter graduated from the Royal Drawing School in 2017. He was awarded the Chairman's Prize and a piece of his work was selected for the Royal Collection.
